@strypey I went to every # # [mini-]con from 2008 to 2014. It went from being literally 1 female present in 2008 to easily a third in 2014. Anybody who seriously (outside of fantasy roleplay) believed in the inferiority of women wouldn't be in the # community.

Wow, all 3 # campuses (#, Lismore, Gold Coast) are closed due to flooding, actual or potential. We do love building on reclaimed swamp in #

@luke Still, wherever you are in #, you're within a stone's throw of the middle of nowhere.

@luke Sunny and still all day. Not a rustle. # is big. Distance between # and the cyclone is greater than between London and Rome.

@mjd "The same transaction in # means # has to acquire Bitcoin somehow" in this hypothetical, by accepting it in payment of tax

@strypey The same transaction in # means # has to acquire Bitcoin somehow. And where someone who's left holding $AU ends up buying stuff available in $AU, usually from AU, someone who's holding Bitcoin has no incentive to make a reciprocal transaction.

@strypey If # sells stuff to # in $AU, AU doesn't have a problem; AU got a real asset in exchange for an accounting record. It's like an uncashed cheque; collect as many as you want. Frame them and hang them on the wall. There's more where that came from.

@strypey During WWI IWW members in #, # and elsewhere were rounded up and imprisoned (or worse) in large numbers. If the NSA has Facebook's data on members & sympathisers of activist groups, why wouldn't it be used in some future process of "extreme vetting"?

@luke The long-term plan is one of my best. I was fed up with web development in regional #, and needed job security, a decent income, and autonomy. I know! I'll become an academic!

@strypey & given #'s tradition of picking up the worst ideas from # and running with them we'll be on steam locos by next year. Take that #! If you don't want our coal, we'll just jolly well burn it ourselves!

As the former # treasurer used to say "broaden the base, lower the rate". But by requiring the possession of money prior to taxation the [GS|VA]T lacked real ambition. # got it right: https://scarfolk.blogspot.com.au/2016/09/physics-tax-1976-1979.html

@kat She seems fine, but without preferential voting in the # (as we have in #) a vote can't "degrade gracefully", as we say in web development, to the least-worst candidate from the duopoly. So she's a symbolic protest vote in safe districts & not an option in marginal ones.

@lnxw48 # is is actually leveraging up on private-sector debt - now over 200% of GDP, mostly mortgages, so that party will be over sometime in 2017. # can carry on through sheer bloodymindedness and "internal deflation" (exploiting the peasants) for a while yet.

@lnxw48 You can't safely shrink a large financial bubble without government spending to fill the gap in demand. In the # and #, not going to happen (might have been possible under President #).
