  1. @strypey Showing my age here. I thought it was going to be a video about how to re-use an old mainframe terminal CRT.

  3. # I love # # In dial-up days `wget -c [URL]` was essential. Now it's still often easier, and certainly feels more "real", to open a terminal than entrust a web browser with downloading a stock-photo-bloated PDF. https://www.gnu.org/software/wget/manual/wget.html

  4. Really struggling to get started on an assignment that's an insult to the intelligence of everybody involved. I'm back in high school and really don't want to be here. #

  6. @tregeagle Tim Harford! Yes, that was the fellow I was thinking of. I need to plug an external hard drive into the bit of my brain that remembers names. Oh wait; that's #

  7. @strypey But don't take my advice on prose style. I'm a student; just a machine for extruding long convoluted sentences under pressure.

  8. @strypey It was the "find another way to fund the social functions currently overseen by governments" bit which, granted, doesn't _necessarily_ imply that taxes fund anything. "another way to conduct the social functions" might be better.

  9. @jeffcliff # (I Am Not An Anthropologist) but I suspect sea shells were, like any other money, tokens of social obligation (i.e. accounts). The value was not in the shells any more than the value of a tally stick was in the stick. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tally_stick

  10. @jeffcliff # rightly said that savings are a hedge against uncertainty. Unfortunately, since his time, governments taxing but not spending have drained savings out of the private sector, so now credit cards ("debtfare") are the safety net.

  11. @jeffcliff There's nothing objective about the world which necessitates negative interest rates; it's a policy decision made by governments "pushing on a string" to try to spur investment after 30 years of neoliberal deindustrialisation.

  12. @jeffcliff There are important differences. Money is an accounting record. If I have an account in credit, I'm concerned about the quality of the institution holding the account. If I buy a commodity I'm concerned about the quality of the commodity, not the vendor.

  17. @tregeagle Ah. Erm. Happy… Okay, tell you what: apparently in some cultures 48 years and a few days is a terribly important milestone. We should have a beer. No dogs, wives, or aunties in this house till Tuesday; they're all off to Nelson Bay.
