  1. @strypey I don't move in those circles, thankfully. # has an advantage in demystifying money and banking as just the great national spreadsheet: nobody pretends our retail banks aren't a government-blessed cartel, so it's easier to look upon the system as a unitary whole.

  2. @tregeagle Here's # debt to GDP ratio. Data from BIS, graph from # (yay!). The camel humps are "the recession we had to have" and the # We've been getting deeper into hock on the imaginary value of our houses since the 80s. Tick… tick… http://ur1.ca/qsqlk

  3. @strypey I went to every # # [mini-]con from 2008 to 2014. It went from being literally 1 female present in 2008 to easily a third in 2014. Anybody who seriously (outside of fantasy roleplay) believed in the inferiority of women wouldn't be in the # community.

  4. Wow, all 3 # campuses (#, Lismore, Gold Coast) are closed due to flooding, actual or potential. We do love building on reclaimed swamp in #

  5. @luke Still, wherever you are in #, you're within a stone's throw of the middle of nowhere.

  6. @luke Sunny and still all day. Not a rustle. # is big. Distance between # and the cyclone is greater than between London and Rome.

  7. @strypey The same transaction in # means # has to acquire Bitcoin somehow. And where someone who's left holding $AU ends up buying stuff available in $AU, usually from AU, someone who's holding Bitcoin has no incentive to make a reciprocal transaction.

  8. @strypey If # sells stuff to # in $AU, AU doesn't have a problem; AU got a real asset in exchange for an accounting record. It's like an uncashed cheque; collect as many as you want. Frame them and hang them on the wall. There's more where that came from.

  9. @strypey During WWI IWW members in #, # and elsewhere were rounded up and imprisoned (or worse) in large numbers. If the NSA has Facebook's data on members & sympathisers of activist groups, why wouldn't it be used in some future process of "extreme vetting"?

  10. @luke The long-term plan is one of my best. I was fed up with web development in regional #, and needed job security, a decent income, and autonomy. I know! I'll become an academic!

  11. @strypey & given #'s tradition of picking up the worst ideas from # and running with them we'll be on steam locos by next year. Take that #! If you don't want our coal, we'll just jolly well burn it ourselves!

  12. Finished economics essay on # TL;DR: in the last 25 years, Japan did a lot of things right and some things wrong. # did _everything_ wrong.

  13. @rodus And # has government policies so sensible and ambitious that they'd be inconceivable in climate-change-denying #: http://www.meti.go.jp/english/policy/energy_environment/smart_community/index.html

  14. As the former # treasurer used to say "broaden the base, lower the rate". But by requiring the possession of money prior to taxation the [GS|VA]T lacked real ambition. # got it right: https://scarfolk.blogspot.com.au/2016/09/physics-tax-1976-1979.html

  15. # regional VC pay vs. Oxbridge "Leszek Borysiewicz of Cambridge received just $597,000, slightly more than Scott Bowman from Central Queensland University but less than Jan Thomas from the University of Southern Queensland." http://ur1.ca/q9m56

  17. @kat In # the term, coined by a Labor government minister in 1974, is "dole bludger", http://ur1.ca/q0qkx The hard up should resent the destitute; the old divide and rule. http://ur1.ca/q0qky

  18. Well played sir! The # # ran in the last election under the slogan "Transparency, Liberty and Digital Reform". TLDR.

  19. @kat She seems fine, but without preferential voting in the # (as we have in #) a vote can't "degrade gracefully", as we say in web development, to the least-worst candidate from the duopoly. So she's a symbolic protest vote in safe districts & not an option in marginal ones.

  20. @lnxw48 # is is actually leveraging up on private-sector debt - now over 200% of GDP, mostly mortgages, so that party will be over sometime in 2017. # can carry on through sheer bloodymindedness and "internal deflation" (exploiting the peasants) for a while yet.
